Narrative:

After landing at ZZZ, ground control advised me to call ZZZ approach. ZZZ informed me that I had clipped a restr area near a research lab. I told approach that I was aware of the restr area and had diverted to the east to avoid it. He restated that I had clipped it. Re-examining my approach to ZZZ I discovered that area abc as called out in the NOTAM was actually restr area r-xyz on the sectional. Nowhere on the sectional or in the map's legend is there a correlation between area abc and r-xyz. This condition added an element of ambiguity to the bulletin. Why wasn't r-xyz called out in the bulletin. Also, the use of a NAVAID would have been a much clrer method of identifying the center of a restr area using a radial and mileage, as opposed to calling out 9 miles east of research lab to an area that could not be identified to the original description (area abc). Naviad's are typically used to identify airspace boundaries -- why not in this instance?

Title: A B35 PLT VIOLATED THE RESTR AIRSPACE INVOLVING A RESEARCH CTR.

Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT ZZZ, GND CTL ADVISED ME TO CALL ZZZ APCH. ZZZ INFORMED ME THAT I HAD CLIPPED A RESTR AREA NEAR A RESEARCH LAB. I TOLD APCH THAT I WAS AWARE OF THE RESTR AREA AND HAD DIVERTED TO THE E TO AVOID IT. HE RESTATED THAT I HAD CLIPPED IT. RE-EXAMINING MY APCH TO ZZZ I DISCOVERED THAT AREA ABC AS CALLED OUT IN THE NOTAM WAS ACTUALLY RESTR AREA R-XYZ ON THE SECTIONAL. ALSO, THE USE OF A NAVAID WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH CLRER METHOD OF IDENTIFYING THE CTR OF A RESTR AREA USING A RADIAL AND MILEAGE, AS OPPOSED TO CALLING OUT 9 MILES EAST OF RESEARCH LAB TO AN AREA THAT COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED TO THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (AREA ABC). NAVIAD'S ARE TYPICALLY USED TO IDENT AIRSPACE BOUNDARIES -- WHY NOT IN THIS INSTANCE?
