Narrative:

The problem started en route from ZZZ1 to ZZZ2 when the top door latch came open, at which time I decided to divert to ZZZ4 to land and have it fixed. The controller was busy and thought I meant to go to ZZZ and not ZZZ3. I then thought that ZZZ would be ok and we would land there. Due to a fair there was a temporary restr area over some of the city and having not planned on landing at ZZZ did not know until the controller told me (which he did). We were on an IFR flight plan in VMC and were vectored around the restr area and cleared for a visual approach, at which time the controller said 'call me on the ground this frequency' to cancel. I assumed that meant we could then change to advisory, which I did. Our turn to the airport brought us close to the restr area and the controller had tried to notify me, but could not because I had changed frequencys. Once on the ground, I was told to call via phone and talk with the controller. He explained that we had gotten very close to the restr area and he was unable to contact us he said no one had complained and we were ok. But that we should still have been with him on the radio. I should have been more clear about our situation with the door, and I learned that cleared for the visual call me on the ground doesn't mean frequency change.

Title: BE55 PLT HAD ACFT DOOR BECOME PARTLY UNLATCHED. IN THE DIVERSION TO LNDG HE DID NOT MAINTAIN CONTINUOUS CONTACT WITH THE APCH CTLR.

Narrative: THE PROB STARTED ENRTE FROM ZZZ1 TO ZZZ2 WHEN THE TOP DOOR LATCH CAME OPEN, AT WHICH TIME I DECIDED TO DIVERT TO ZZZ4 TO LAND AND HAVE IT FIXED. WE WERE ON AN IFR FLT PLAN IN VMC AND WERE VECTORED AROUND THE RESTR AREA AND CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH, AT WHICH TIME THE CTLR SAID 'CALL ME ON THE GND THIS FREQ' TO CANCEL. I ASSUMED THAT MEANT WE COULD THEN CHANGE TO ADVISORY, WHICH I DID. OUR TURN TO THE ARPT BROUGHT US CLOSE TO THE RESTR AREA AND THE CTLR HAD TRIED TO NOTIFY ME, BUT COULD NOT BECAUSE I HAD CHANGED FREQS. ONCE ON THE GND, I WAS TOLD TO CALL VIA PHONE AND TALK WITH THE CTLR. HE EXPLAINED THAT WE HAD GOTTEN VERY CLOSE TO THE RESTR AREA AND HE WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT US HE SAID NO ONE HAD COMPLAINED AND WE WERE OK. BUT THAT WE SHOULD STILL HAVE BEEN WITH HIM ON THE RADIO. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CLR ABOUT OUR SIT WITH THE DOOR, AND I LEARNED THAT CLRED FOR THE VISUAL CALL ME ON THE GND DOESN'T MEAN FREQ CHANGE.
