I apparently installed an incompatible part on air carrier aircraft X. The part was an audio selector panel with our part number when the correct number should have been XXX. I obtained the part number as the result of a telephone call to our maintenance control and failed to xchk it with the ipc.

Narrative: I APPARENTLY INSTALLED AN INCOMPATIBLE PART ON ACR ACFT X. THE PART WAS AN AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL WITH OUR PART NUMBER WHEN THE CORRECT NUMBER SHOULD HAVE BEEN XXX. I OBTAINED THE PART NUMBER AS THE RESULT OF A TELEPHONE CALL TO OUR MAINT CTL AND FAILED TO XCHK IT WITH THE IPC.
