Narrative:
At top of climb, FL370, on autoplt/autothrottles mach .72. As the power was reduced from climb EPR to cruise, the #1 engine began a series of compressor stalls. We asked ATC for an immediate turn wbound to land and lower altitude. As we descended through FL350, the engine stabilized and operated normally. I elected to divert to mco, as it was 125 NM ahead, pretty much on a 3:1 glide from altitude. Medium large transport was only 90 mi ahead, but due to closed tower and runway construction, I felt orl was a more suitable diversion airport.,
