Narrative:

On very short final (approximately 400 ft AGL) to runway 8L at hnl, tower directed us to hold short of runway 4L on landing roll. Captain asked if this was a lahso request 'now?' (meaning this late in the approach). Tower stammered and then directed a go around. Good call. There was a B747 also on very short final, approximately 400 ft AGL to runway 4R, an intersecting runway. We did a normal go around, was revectored for a very tight visual approach, which was accomplished safely with no further problems. It appears approach control set up the tower with an unacceptable situation, to which tower had no choice but to resolve best it could. We had no problems complying with the directed go around. But this captain has had a similar request from hnl tower a couple months ago, to hold short of another runway, that was during the landing roll. Hnl approach and tower need to get their act together and cease placing the burden upon airline pilots to resolve their potential operations at the last moment.

Title: B777 QUESTIONS HNL LCL CTLR CLRNC RESTR ON SHORT FINAL WHEN OBSERVING A B747 LNDG ON ANOTHER INTERSECTING RWY AND EXECUTES A GAR.

Narrative: ON VERY SHORT FINAL (APPROX 400 FT AGL) TO RWY 8L AT HNL, TWR DIRECTED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4L ON LNDG ROLL. CAPT ASKED IF THIS WAS A LAHSO REQUEST 'NOW?' (MEANING THIS LATE IN THE APCH). TWR STAMMERED AND THEN DIRECTED A GAR. GOOD CALL. THERE WAS A B747 ALSO ON VERY SHORT FINAL, APPROX 400 FT AGL TO RWY 4R, AN INTERSECTING RWY. WE DID A NORMAL GAR, WAS REVECTORED FOR A VERY TIGHT VISUAL APCH, WHICH WAS ACCOMPLISHED SAFELY WITH NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. IT APPEARS APCH CTL SET UP THE TWR WITH AN UNACCEPTABLE SIT, TO WHICH TWR HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO RESOLVE BEST IT COULD. WE HAD NO PROBS COMPLYING WITH THE DIRECTED GAR. BUT THIS CAPT HAS HAD A SIMILAR REQUEST FROM HNL TWR A COUPLE MONTHS AGO, TO HOLD SHORT OF ANOTHER RWY, THAT WAS DURING THE LNDG ROLL. HNL APCH AND TWR NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER AND CEASE PLACING THE BURDEN UPON AIRLINE PLTS TO RESOLVE THEIR POTENTIAL OPS AT THE LAST MOMENT.
