Narrative:

Received clearance from ground. Was in hurry to get in line for the runup even though it would have only made the difference between #2 or #3. 1) failed to adjust altimeter for the local barometer setting resulting in a 500 ft vertical error. This was corrected during climb out but was an added distraction. 2) failed to dial transponder code for IFR clearance. After getting a good chew from tower, I had to dig for my clearance, dial it in, get another chew from tower for straying from heading. Tower wisely held me on his frequency before turning me over to denver departure. Lesson for me: (very simple) don't break the pre flight pattern. This is only 1 min of work.

Narrative: RECEIVED CLRNC FROM GND. WAS IN HURRY TO GET IN LINE FOR THE RUNUP EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD HAVE ONLY MADE THE DIFFERENCE BTWN #2 OR #3. 1) FAILED TO ADJUST ALTIMETER FOR THE LOCAL BAROMETER SETTING RESULTING IN A 500 FT VERTICAL ERROR. THIS WAS CORRECTED DURING CLBOUT BUT WAS AN ADDED DISTR. 2) FAILED TO DIAL XPONDER CODE FOR IFR CLRNC. AFTER GETTING A GOOD CHEW FROM TWR, I HAD TO DIG FOR MY CLRNC, DIAL IT IN, GET ANOTHER CHEW FROM TWR FOR STRAYING FROM HDG. TWR WISELY HELD ME ON HIS FREQ BEFORE TURNING ME OVER TO DENVER DEP. LESSON FOR ME: (VERY SIMPLE) DON'T BREAK THE PRE FLT PATTERN. THIS IS ONLY 1 MIN OF WORK.
