Narrative:

We received a clearance to taxi to runway 05L. I do not remember being told to hold short of runway 05R. Sometimes you do, sometimes you do not. Shortly after starting to taxi, we were told to follow a lance. We followed the lance and when I realized he was going to a different runway, I had nearly overshot my turn. I braked and turned about 135 degree to make my taxiway. This put me near the hold short line. I ask the first officer if we were cleared to cross. He said we were. About 1/3 of the way across, ground control said you are not cleared to cross. I then saw another aircraft high and left, whom I assumed was landing (he was actually taking off) and could not see me. My quickest way to clear the runway was to continue across. Factors: runway construction, being told to follow when 'pass behind' was what was desired, I think one controller was working both tower and ground control. We were not as familiar with the field as the controller might have assumed. Supplemental information from acn 522180: the captain braked hard and turned the aircraft right (hard, about 135 degree to make the taxiway), at which point the nose of the airplane was basically over the hold short line. The captain asked me if we were cleared across and my initial recollection was that we were, so I said yes. He released the brakes and my next reaction was to call ground to confirm if cleared. Since we were already moving I chose to clear (visually) to the approach end of the runway and saw nothing and felt at least safe, if not confused. About 1/4 the way through the crossing ground called saying 'hold.' we looked left and saw a light airplane climbing over us. Supplemental information from acn 522892: PA 28 was rolling on runway 5R and the D328 kept on rolling, was instructed to hold short again (it appeared to be moving too fast to stop short of runway) didn't answer till he was across. Another problem the height of the tower (or lack of). The angle from the tower to runway to taxiway is nearly flat, so trend information is very difficult. You can not tell on taxi or takeoff if aircraft are on runway or taxiway.

Title: DO328 FLC CONFUSED WITH POSITIONING WHILE TAXIING TO RWY AND CROSS HOLD SHORT LINE CONFLICTING WITH DEPING PA28 AS TYS CTLR CHALLENGES INCURSION.

Narrative: WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 05L. I DO NOT REMEMBER BEING TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 05R. SOMETIMES YOU DO, SOMETIMES YOU DO NOT. SHORTLY AFTER STARTING TO TAXI, WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW A LANCE. WE FOLLOWED THE LANCE AND WHEN I REALIZED HE WAS GOING TO A DIFFERENT RWY, I HAD NEARLY OVERSHOT MY TURN. I BRAKED AND TURNED ABOUT 135 DEG TO MAKE MY TXWY. THIS PUT ME NEAR THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I ASK THE FO IF WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS. HE SAID WE WERE. ABOUT 1/3 OF THE WAY ACROSS, GND CTL SAID YOU ARE NOT CLRED TO CROSS. I THEN SAW ANOTHER ACFT HIGH AND LEFT, WHOM I ASSUMED WAS LNDG (HE WAS ACTUALLY TAKING OFF) AND COULD NOT SEE ME. MY QUICKEST WAY TO CLR THE RWY WAS TO CONTINUE ACROSS. FACTORS: RWY CONSTRUCTION, BEING TOLD TO FOLLOW WHEN 'PASS BEHIND' WAS WHAT WAS DESIRED, I THINK ONE CTLR WAS WORKING BOTH TWR AND GND CTL. WE WERE NOT AS FAMILIAR WITH THE FIELD AS THE CTLR MIGHT HAVE ASSUMED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 522180: THE CAPT BRAKED HARD AND TURNED THE ACFT R (HARD, ABOUT 135 DEG TO MAKE THE TXWY), AT WHICH POINT THE NOSE OF THE AIRPLANE WAS BASICALLY OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THE CAPT ASKED ME IF WE WERE CLRED ACROSS AND MY INITIAL RECOLLECTION WAS THAT WE WERE, SO I SAID YES. HE RELEASED THE BRAKES AND MY NEXT REACTION WAS TO CALL GND TO CONFIRM IF CLRED. SINCE WE WERE ALREADY MOVING I CHOSE TO CLR (VISUALLY) TO THE APCH END OF THE RWY AND SAW NOTHING AND FELT AT LEAST SAFE, IF NOT CONFUSED. ABOUT 1/4 THE WAY THROUGH THE XING GND CALLED SAYING 'HOLD.' WE LOOKED LEFT AND SAW A LIGHT AIRPLANE CLBING OVER US. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 522892: PA 28 WAS ROLLING ON RWY 5R AND THE D328 KEPT ON ROLLING, WAS INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT AGAIN (IT APPEARED TO BE MOVING TOO FAST TO STOP SHORT OF RWY) DIDN'T ANSWER TILL HE WAS ACROSS. ANOTHER PROB THE HEIGHT OF THE TWR (OR LACK OF). THE ANGLE FROM THE TWR TO RWY TO TXWY IS NEARLY FLAT, SO TREND INFO IS VERY DIFFICULT. YOU CAN NOT TELL ON TAXI OR TKOF IF ACFT ARE ON RWY OR TXWY.
