Narrative:

I was the PIC of a flight to kapalua. Center cleared us for visual and told us to follow C208 caravan. Then, we were switched to unicom frequency. Upon contacting unicom, we were advised to overtake the caravan which was a slower aircraft. My first officer and I understood the same exact thing that was to overtake this caravan. Thus, I decided it was reasonable and safe for us to overtake this aircraft. The caravan was in contact with unicom before us, therefore, we believed that they communicated with each other to let us overtake as a courtesy gesture. Safety was not jeopardized in anyway, at anytime, when we overtook the caravan well cleared on the right side. When we were turning from base to final, the caravan was approximately 3 mi behind us. However, the caravan pilot decided to take a 360 degree turn because he felt he was getting too close to our aircraft, according to his judgement. After we landed and parked the aircraft, I received a message from center stating that the caravan pilot has made a complaint against us for not following behind him to the airport. I was surprised by his complaint because we thought the overtake was a courtesy gesture from him. Therefore, I am reporting this conflict in a good merit to avoid further misunderstanding and miscom between pilots and unicom.

Title: MDT COMMUTER FLC OVERTAKE AND PASS A CESSNA CARAVAN ON DOWNWIND LEG AT A NON CTLED ARPT RESULTING IN CUTTING IN FRONT OF THE C208 DURING BASE TO FINAL. THE C208 REGISTERED A COMPLAINT WITH CTR.

Narrative: I WAS THE PIC OF A FLT TO KAPALUA. CTR CLRED US FOR VISUAL AND TOLD US TO FOLLOW C208 CARAVAN. THEN, WE WERE SWITCHED TO UNICOM FREQ. UPON CONTACTING UNICOM, WE WERE ADVISED TO OVERTAKE THE CARAVAN WHICH WAS A SLOWER ACFT. MY FO AND I UNDERSTOOD THE SAME EXACT THING THAT WAS TO OVERTAKE THIS CARAVAN. THUS, I DECIDED IT WAS REASONABLE AND SAFE FOR US TO OVERTAKE THIS ACFT. THE CARAVAN WAS IN CONTACT WITH UNICOM BEFORE US, THEREFORE, WE BELIEVED THAT THEY COMMUNICATED WITH EACH OTHER TO LET US OVERTAKE AS A COURTESY GESTURE. SAFETY WAS NOT JEOPARDIZED IN ANYWAY, AT ANYTIME, WHEN WE OVERTOOK THE CARAVAN WELL CLRED ON THE R SIDE. WHEN WE WERE TURNING FROM BASE TO FINAL, THE CARAVAN WAS APPROX 3 MI BEHIND US. HOWEVER, THE CARAVAN PLT DECIDED TO TAKE A 360 DEG TURN BECAUSE HE FELT HE WAS GETTING TOO CLOSE TO OUR ACFT, ACCORDING TO HIS JUDGEMENT. AFTER WE LANDED AND PARKED THE ACFT, I RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM CTR STATING THAT THE CARAVAN PLT HAS MADE A COMPLAINT AGAINST US FOR NOT FOLLOWING BEHIND HIM TO THE ARPT. I WAS SURPRISED BY HIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE WE THOUGHT THE OVERTAKE WAS A COURTESY GESTURE FROM HIM. THEREFORE, I AM RPTING THIS CONFLICT IN A GOOD MERIT TO AVOID FURTHER MISUNDERSTANDING AND MISCOM BTWN PLTS AND UNICOM.
