Narrative:

At sav ATCT, we have weak primary targets in the vicinity of broun intersection, numerous north atlantic traffic and coasting. Problem worse with northbound traffic. This has been a problem since mar/xa/01. This is unsafe for separating aircraft. I have advised management via ucr. Solution: please fix the problem. It has been ongoing for 5 months. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: controller specialist advised that the radar coverage area in question is known, well documented, and trained for. Along V3, north of ssi VORTAC, radar coverage is intermittent below 6000 ft, and relatively poor around 3000 ft. Maintenance has advised that they are conducting preliminary analyses planning consideration for another radar site at brunswick, GA. The controller alleged ZJX has radar coverage, from their long range radar site, barely down through 10000 ft. So bringing in ZJX radar is not viable for sav.

Title: SAV ATCT TRACON CTLR CONCERNED WITH WEAK RADAR TARGET STRENGTH IN THE VICINITY OF BROUN INTXN, ALONG V3.

Narrative: AT SAV ATCT, WE HAVE WEAK PRIMARY TARGETS IN THE VICINITY OF BROUN INTXN, NUMEROUS NORTH ATLANTIC TRAFFIC AND COASTING. PROB WORSE WITH NBOUND TFC. THIS HAS BEEN A PROB SINCE MAR/XA/01. THIS IS UNSAFE FOR SEPARATING ACFT. I HAVE ADVISED MGMNT VIA UCR. SOLUTION: PLEASE FIX THE PROB. IT HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR 5 MONTHS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CTLR SPECIALIST ADVISED THAT THE RADAR COVERAGE AREA IN QUESTION IS KNOWN, WELL DOCUMENTED, AND TRAINED FOR. ALONG V3, N OF SSI VORTAC, RADAR COVERAGE IS INTERMITTENT BELOW 6000 FT, AND RELATIVELY POOR AROUND 3000 FT. MAINT HAS ADVISED THAT THEY ARE CONDUCTING PRELIMINARY ANALYSES PLANNING CONSIDERATION FOR ANOTHER RADAR SITE AT BRUNSWICK, GA. THE CTLR ALLEGED ZJX HAS RADAR COVERAGE, FROM THEIR LONG RANGE RADAR SITE, BARELY DOWN THROUGH 10000 FT. SO BRINGING IN ZJX RADAR IS NOT VIABLE FOR SAV.
