Narrative:

On descent into kaus on the biter 3 arrival, we were given clearance to FL200. Passing FL220 we were cleared direct to kaus. I updated route to direct FAF thus dropping the VNAV descent path. I selected indicated airspeed, not noticing that the aircraft was already in the altitude capture mode. Altitude warning came on passing FL197.5. As I stopped the descent, center called traffic at 10 mi at FL190. Our altitude touched FL190 as I corrected back to FL200. When other aircraft came on our TCASII, they were 300 degrees below off to the left. I was back level at FL200 prior to traffic passing 2-3 mi off left side. We got TA. No RA in this event. The rest of the descent into kaus was normal. Prevention of this occurrence is always in monitoring the FMA as you touch any vertical navigation controls.
