Narrative:

Ground control instructed us to 'taxi to runway 35.' while taxiing to runway 35, just prior to crossing runway 8, I checked to see if final approach to runway 8 was clear. There was a light aircraft touching down on the runway I was about to cross, so I stomped on the brakes and stopped. Just as I came to a stop, ground control said 'hold short of runway 8.' this instruction was given much too late to hold short. The conflict was avoided because I checked for traffic and stopped, instead of crossing a runway that I had been cleared across, but had an aircraft landing on it.

Title: MD88 CAPT CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP DURING TAXI OUT WHEN BEFORE XING A RWY ALREADY CLRED TO CROSS HE NOTICED A LIGHT ACFT TOUCHING DOWN ON LNDG.

Narrative: GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO 'TAXI TO RWY 35.' WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 35, JUST PRIOR TO XING RWY 8, I CHKED TO SEE IF FINAL APCH TO RWY 8 WAS CLR. THERE WAS A LIGHT ACFT TOUCHING DOWN ON THE RWY I WAS ABOUT TO CROSS, SO I STOMPED ON THE BRAKES AND STOPPED. JUST AS I CAME TO A STOP, GND CTL SAID 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8.'
