Narrative:

Deviating for thunderstorms en route from den to msp, den ATC advised our close proximity to another aircraft at our same altitude. ATC advised aircraft was approximately 5 1/2 mi from our position. Deviations we made were cleared to us earlier by another controller. However, a new controller had us and expected us to be on an assigned heading. I was so on flight, no TCASII alerts were received and no deviations were necessary to avoid any conflict. I believe miscoms between controllers and between crew members in our aircraft contributed to this. Unclr instructions were given to us about further clearance to deviate around WX or to maintain an assigned heading.
