Narrative:
Normal takeoff on runway 25R (full length). At approximately 110 KTS, we aborted after hearing a pop -- like a compressor stall. I asked the first officer to keep the customers in their seats as we came to a stop prior to taxiway H. The left egt had a red overtemp box and the oil pressure was 1, so we ran the severe damage qrc and shut the left engine down. I had the fire trucks examine the engine and tires. They said the airplane looked ok. Since we were well below the brake caution zone, I taxied clear of the runway at taxiway K. I explained to the customers that we'd had an engine failure and would be returning to the gate. I coordinated with maintenance at the gate to not set the parking brake (3.4 highest brake temperature). Later, a flight attendant on the left side of the airplane reported seeing flames shooting forward out of the left engine. Also, I saw metal shavings in the tail pipe of the left engine. Supplemental information from acn 520359: visual inspection confirmed severe damage to the left engine. All handled as trained and in a textbook manner.

Title: A B777 CREW EXECUTED A REJECTED TKOF AT LAX WHEN L ENG FAILED.
Narrative: NORMAL TKOF ON RWY 25R (FULL LENGTH). AT APPROX 110 KTS, WE ABORTED AFTER HEARING A POP -- LIKE A COMPRESSOR STALL. LATER, A FLT ATTENDANT ON THE L SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE RPTED SEEING FLAMES SHOOTING FORWARD OUT OF THE L ENG. ALSO, I SAW METAL SHAVINGS IN THE TAIL PIPE OF THE L ENG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 520359: VISUAL INSPECTION CONFIRMED SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE L ENG. ALL HANDLED AS TRAINED AND IN A TEXTBOOK MANNER.
