Narrative:

33 NM west of seg VOR, we were told to descend from 17000 ft to 11000 ft, pilot's discretion. I was the PNF. I set 11000 ft into the altitude select panel. The captain started to descend. Right away, a couple thousand ft into the descent, ATC asked us if we called leaving 17000 ft. I wasn't sure what he said, so I asked him to 'say again.' he said 'disregard.' the captain told me what the controller said. I wasn't sure if I had called leaving 17000 ft or not. The controller gave us a frequency change a few mins later, never said anything else about it.
