Narrative:

On approach to phx from the south, was vectored by TRACON to a visual to runway 25L behind an MD80. ATC turned me on base leg and cleared me for the visual. Because of ATC's turn, I had only 1 - 1 1/2 mi spacing behind the MD80 and no way to slow enough to increase spacing. On call to tower I requested sidestep to runway 25R, but an aircraft had just gone into position. Tower offered me runway 26 on the north side which I accepted and was able to get stabilized before 500 ft, but not by much. TRACON really put be behind the 8 ball and extraordinary maneuvering on my part was required to avoid going around. I called them to give feedback.
