Narrative:

We were issued an ILS runway 4R at ewr in VMC. Either the aircraft ahead slowed prematurely or we were not spaced adequately by approach, and by the OM we had only 2 mi separation. At 1200 ft, tower approved sidestep to runway 4L. Although the first officer performed the approach to runway 4L on the VASI accurately (no electronic aid was available), the flare was initiated high, and the touchdown was approximately 1000 ft beyond the touchdown zone. (I was just about to call for a go around when the wheels touched. I determined we could stop adequately with normal braking.) we exited the runway at taxiway west with approximately 1100 ft of runway unused. The lack of electronic landing aid (GS) was paramount in the incident. As well, from experience, I believe the VASI is biased too high for this runway. Regardless, although the landing was uneventful, if it were to happen again, I would call for a go around quicker.

Title: THE PIC OF A HVY JET ALLOWS HIS FO TO PERFORM A LONG LNDG AFTER HAVING TO SIDESTEP TO RWY 4L DURING AN IN TRAIL SEPARATION PROB AT EWR, NJ.

Narrative: WE WERE ISSUED AN ILS RWY 4R AT EWR IN VMC. EITHER THE ACFT AHEAD SLOWED PREMATURELY OR WE WERE NOT SPACED ADEQUATELY BY APCH, AND BY THE OM WE HAD ONLY 2 MI SEPARATION. AT 1200 FT, TWR APPROVED SIDESTEP TO RWY 4L. ALTHOUGH THE FO PERFORMED THE APCH TO RWY 4L ON THE VASI ACCURATELY (NO ELECTRONIC AID WAS AVAILABLE), THE FLARE WAS INITIATED HIGH, AND THE TOUCHDOWN WAS APPROX 1000 FT BEYOND THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE. (I WAS JUST ABOUT TO CALL FOR A GAR WHEN THE WHEELS TOUCHED. I DETERMINED WE COULD STOP ADEQUATELY WITH NORMAL BRAKING.) WE EXITED THE RWY AT TXWY W WITH APPROX 1100 FT OF RWY UNUSED. THE LACK OF ELECTRONIC LNDG AID (GS) WAS PARAMOUNT IN THE INCIDENT. AS WELL, FROM EXPERIENCE, I BELIEVE THE VASI IS BIASED TOO HIGH FOR THIS RWY. REGARDLESS, ALTHOUGH THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL, IF IT WERE TO HAPPEN AGAIN, I WOULD CALL FOR A GAR QUICKER.
