Narrative:

On jun/xa/01 an incorrect engine fire bottle squib was removed and replaced on air carrier dash 8/200 aircraft. The position specified for removal was 'fwd 2.' this aircraft has 2 engine fire bottles mounted one behind the other at the l-hand wing root, with 2 discharge squibs per bottle. The squib is not a serialized part from the manufacturer, but air carrier engraves a company serial number for time tracking of the part. Confusion is caused by the air carrier position description 'fwd 2' as 'fwd' can refer to a bottle or squib, just as '2' can refer to a bottle or squib. 'Bottle' or 'squib' needs to be added to the location description to avoid confusion. The other position were checked by flashlight and mirror, but the serial number requested to be removed was not located this night. These serial numbers should be stamped into the hex portion of the part, not lightly engraved. As a result of this, the part stayed on the aircraft 5 more days, and was removed jun/xf/01 at the ZZZ maintenance base. This overflew the target date of a time limited part.

Title: A DHC8-200 WAS OPERATED FOR 5 DAYS IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH AN ENG FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE SQUIB OVER LIFE LIMIT.

Narrative: ON JUN/XA/01 AN INCORRECT ENG FIRE BOTTLE SQUIB WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED ON ACR DASH 8/200 ACFT. THE POS SPECIFIED FOR REMOVAL WAS 'FWD 2.' THIS ACFT HAS 2 ENG FIRE BOTTLES MOUNTED ONE BEHIND THE OTHER AT THE L-HAND WING ROOT, WITH 2 DISCHARGE SQUIBS PER BOTTLE. THE SQUIB IS NOT A SERIALIZED PART FROM THE MANUFACTURER, BUT ACR ENGRAVES A COMPANY SERIAL NUMBER FOR TIME TRACKING OF THE PART. CONFUSION IS CAUSED BY THE ACR POS DESCRIPTION 'FWD 2' AS 'FWD' CAN REFER TO A BOTTLE OR SQUIB, JUST AS '2' CAN REFER TO A BOTTLE OR SQUIB. 'BOTTLE' OR 'SQUIB' NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO THE LOCATION DESCRIPTION TO AVOID CONFUSION. THE OTHER POS WERE CHKED BY FLASHLIGHT AND MIRROR, BUT THE SERIAL NUMBER REQUESTED TO BE REMOVED WAS NOT LOCATED THIS NIGHT. THESE SERIAL NUMBERS SHOULD BE STAMPED INTO THE HEX PORTION OF THE PART, NOT LIGHTLY ENGRAVED. AS A RESULT OF THIS, THE PART STAYED ON THE ACFT 5 MORE DAYS, AND WAS REMOVED JUN/XF/01 AT THE ZZZ MAINT BASE. THIS OVERFLEW THE TARGET DATE OF A TIME LIMITED PART.
