Narrative:

We requested VFR flight following, through ZAB, during climb out. Student leveled off at wrong altitude for direction of flight. Center wanted to know our direction of flight, destination and VFR cruising altitude. We advised the altitude as 9500 ft MSL. They advised that this would be the wrong altitude for direction of flight. We climbed to 10500 ft MSL. There were no conflicts.
