Narrative:

Altitude deviation on climb out. On climb out, first officer hand flying, passed jaspa on JPOOL9, cleared to 17000 ft. Passing 15500 ft, call from flight attendant regarding ride. Departure gave traffic and frequency change. First officer missed 1000 ft prior call, head down talking with flight attendant. Passing 17200 ft, first officer noted altitude. Began correcting -- saw 17300 ft top of descent to 17000 ft. Center called us to verify altitude. Traffic northbound approximately 10 mi at FL180. No TCASII alert. ATC confirmed no problem. I briefed first officer to use autoplt for high workload times. Distraction of flight attendant call, frequency change, etc, led to altitude excursion.
