Narrative:

Palm springs departure handed us off to center passing 11000 ft. The first officer was using the autoplt in climb mode with the altitude alert system armed for a 12000 ft level off. By the time I was able to check in the aircraft was leveling off at 12000 ft. Palm springs altimeter was 29.66 and center gave us 29.90 for our destination airport lax. This was set in the captain and first officer altimeters which put the aircraft 300 ft high (12300 ft). I told the first officer to use the autoplt altitude adjustment rocker switch to correct the altitude. This automated mode was not working fast enough so the first officer disconnected the autoplt and manually corrected altitude to our assigned altitude of 12000 ft. ATC told us to 'stop climb' at 12500 ft while we were correcting the problem. We told no TA's or traffic on our TCASII which was set at 15 NM. Corrective change suggestion- if high barometric changes are to occur between controlling agencies, pilots should be advised.

Title: ALT DEV OCCURS WHEN EMB120 ACFT CREW FAILS TO MONITOR ALT ASSIGNMENT CTL AFTER AN ALTIMETER SETTING CHANGE NEAR PDZ, CA.

Narrative: PALM SPRINGS DEP HANDED US OFF TO CTR PASSING 11000 FT. THE FO WAS USING THE AUTOPLT IN CLB MODE WITH THE ALT ALERT SYS ARMED FOR A 12000 FT LEVEL OFF. BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO CHK IN THE ACFT WAS LEVELING OFF AT 12000 FT. PALM SPRINGS ALTIMETER WAS 29.66 AND CTR GAVE US 29.90 FOR OUR DEST ARPT LAX. THIS WAS SET IN THE CAPT AND FO ALTIMETERS WHICH PUT THE ACFT 300 FT HIGH (12300 FT). I TOLD THE FO TO USE THE AUTOPLT ALT ADJUSTMENT ROCKER SWITCH TO CORRECT THE ALT. THIS AUTOMATED MODE WAS NOT WORKING FAST ENOUGH SO THE FO DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND MANUALLY CORRECTED ALT TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 12000 FT. ATC TOLD US TO 'STOP CLB' AT 12500 FT WHILE WE WERE CORRECTING THE PROB. WE TOLD NO TA'S OR TFC ON OUR TCASII WHICH WAS SET AT 15 NM. CORRECTIVE CHANGE SUGGESTION- IF HIGH BAROMETRIC CHANGES ARE TO OCCUR BTWN CONTROLLING AGENCIES, PLTS SHOULD BE ADVISED.
