Narrative:

We were being step climbed from FL230 to FL260. After being level at FL260 for a time, we were cleared to FL280. We started a climb and after being level we had good momentum for a very good rate. I noticed at FL280 the plane did not stop climbing. I looked at the autoplt. It had captured but did not level off. I told the captain, 'missed altitude'. The captain immediately started corrective action. He disconnected the autoplt and had to start trimming the aircraft nose down. We went immediately back to FL280. With the good rate of climb we had, we had gone over by approximately 200 ft to 300 ft. At the same time I told the captain about the altitude miss, ATC was calling to verify our altitude. I told them we had missed a little but leveling at FL280 ft. Apparently, an air carrier had a TCASII alert and changed his altitude. We informed ATC that we had an autoplt problem.

Title: C550 CREW HAD AN ALT OVERSHOOT AFTER ATTEMPTING A FLT GUIDANCE SYS ALT CAPTURE FROM AN EXCESSIVE RATE OF CLB IN ZTL CLASS A.

Narrative: WE WERE BEING STEP CLBED FROM FL230 TO FL260. AFTER BEING LEVEL AT FL260 FOR A TIME, WE WERE CLRED TO FL280. WE STARTED A CLB AND AFTER BEING LEVEL WE HAD GOOD MOMENTUM FOR A VERY GOOD RATE. I NOTICED AT FL280 THE PLANE DID NOT STOP CLBING. I LOOKED AT THE AUTOPLT. IT HAD CAPTURED BUT DID NOT LEVEL OFF. I TOLD THE CAPT, 'MISSED ALT'. THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY STARTED CORRECTIVE ACTION. HE DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND HAD TO START TRIMMING THE ACFT NOSE DOWN. WE WENT IMMEDIATELY BACK TO FL280. WITH THE GOOD RATE OF CLB WE HAD, WE HAD GONE OVER BY APPROX 200 FT TO 300 FT. AT THE SAME TIME I TOLD THE CAPT ABOUT THE ALT MISS, ATC WAS CALLING TO VERIFY OUR ALT. I TOLD THEM WE HAD MISSED A LITTLE BUT LEVELING AT FL280 FT. APPARENTLY, AN AIR CARRIER HAD A TCASII ALERT AND CHANGED HIS ALT. WE INFORMED ATC THAT WE HAD AN AUTOPLT PROB.
