Narrative:

I was prepared for my first nighttime solo. I had never gone from the helicopter flight ramp to runway 8, we always depart directly from ramp. After presolo briefing, I was of the understanding that if no hold short instructions were given, and I was told to taxi to the runway, that it meant to taxi directly to runway (controller did not specify via taxiway). I was hovering over grass when I made my initial call 'request taxi for runway 8 for fixed wing pattern.' controller's reply was 'aircraft X, taxi runway 8.' so then I taxied runway 8, first over grass part of the way and then onto taxiway. I noticed an airplane on final. I called controller 'confirm taxi runway 8.' controller's reply was 'aircraft X, hold your position.' the airplane landed and controller told me to return to the ramp.
