Narrative:

The captain (PF) entered the approach area with excessive speed (250 KTS). After being cleared for a short visual approach to runway 17L, the captain was unable to slow the aircraft to the proper approach speed. The captain turned right off the approach, which took us across the approach for runway 17R and back to runway 17L before the aircraft could be slowed. ATC was not informed of the PF's intentions.
