Narrative:
Exhaust retainer came off allowing exhaust pipe to fall away from the cylinder head causing the mixture to burn lean. The engine ran so badly I declared an emergency and landed safety on a downwind runway. Replaced gasket and 5/16-18 nut and aircraft ran good.
