Narrative:

Departures on runway 19L/right and runway 15. At taxi time, was given the option of runway 19R or runway 15. Chose runway 15 because it is close to where the plane is parked. Wind was from the ssw (from approximately 190 degrees). After takeoff, started a right turn into the crosswind leg at 1200 ft MSL (approximately 450 ft AGL). The ATC controller had specified a left turn at 2000 ft MSL. The problem arose as a result of an error (lack of situational awareness) on my part. I was thinking in terms of a departure from runway 19R and a right turn to the west (my initial direction of flight, as communicated to the ATC controller). Was immediately reprimanded by the ATC controller (tower) but was allowed to fly out on a west heading. Continued the rest of the flight (and the return trip) uneventfully. The flight was a solo student cross country training flight for meeting the private pilot certificate requirements (dpa-vys and back).

Title: SOLO STUDENT PLT IN C172 TURNS PREMATURELY THE WRONG WAY DURING INITIAL CLB AFTER TKOF.

Narrative: DEPS ON RWY 19L/R AND RWY 15. AT TAXI TIME, WAS GIVEN THE OPTION OF RWY 19R OR RWY 15. CHOSE RWY 15 BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE TO WHERE THE PLANE IS PARKED. WIND WAS FROM THE SSW (FROM APPROX 190 DEGS). AFTER TKOF, STARTED A R TURN INTO THE XWIND LEG AT 1200 FT MSL (APPROX 450 FT AGL). THE ATC CTLR HAD SPECIFIED A L TURN AT 2000 FT MSL. THE PROB AROSE AS A RESULT OF AN ERROR (LACK OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS) ON MY PART. I WAS THINKING IN TERMS OF A DEP FROM RWY 19R AND A R TURN TO THE W (MY INITIAL DIRECTION OF FLT, AS COMMUNICATED TO THE ATC CTLR). WAS IMMEDIATELY REPRIMANDED BY THE ATC CTLR (TWR) BUT WAS ALLOWED TO FLY OUT ON A W HDG. CONTINUED THE REST OF THE FLT (AND THE RETURN TRIP) UNEVENTFULLY. THE FLT WAS A SOLO STUDENT XCOUNTRY TRAINING FLT FOR MEETING THE PVT PLT CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS (DPA-VYS AND BACK).
