Narrative:

Climbing to FL310, I overshot the altitude by 400 ft. I was hand flying and am still getting used to the flight path stable characteristic of the A320/319. After correcting and doublechking the FMA, I realized that the autoplt was not on. Normally, I turn on the autoplt in the low 20's but ATC asked for a maximum climb to FL310, which helped to add to my paying more attention to my climb rather than to verify if the autoplt was engaged. In my mind, I thought the autoplt was on. Another reason to doublechk the flight mode annunciators.
