Narrative:

We were cleared to 10000 ft in knoxville's airspace. Rate of climb through 6000 ft was 3000 FPM. I slowed rate of climb to 1500 FPM through 8000 ft and at 9900 ft pushed the altitude hold button on the autoplt panel. I observed the light go on. While I was doing this, the first officer and I were looking at a GPS message, and I did not notice the altitude hold 'kicking off' until I glanced at the altimeter, and we were climbing through 10500 ft. I arrested the climb at 10700 ft as we were being called by knoxville approach to ask about our altitude. I was able to return to 10000 ft within 1 - 1 1/2 mins. The rate of climb in excess of 1000 FPM I believe was excessive for altitude capture, and the GPS distraction took my focus away from flying the aircraft.

Title: LJ5 FLC OVERSHOOTS ASSIGNED ALT DUE TO COCKPIT DISTRS.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO 10000 FT IN KNOXVILLE'S AIRSPACE. RATE OF CLB THROUGH 6000 FT WAS 3000 FPM. I SLOWED RATE OF CLB TO 1500 FPM THROUGH 8000 FT AND AT 9900 FT PUSHED THE ALT HOLD BUTTON ON THE AUTOPLT PANEL. I OBSERVED THE LIGHT GO ON. WHILE I WAS DOING THIS, THE FO AND I WERE LOOKING AT A GPS MESSAGE, AND I DID NOT NOTICE THE ALT HOLD 'KICKING OFF' UNTIL I GLANCED AT THE ALTIMETER, AND WE WERE CLBING THROUGH 10500 FT. I ARRESTED THE CLB AT 10700 FT AS WE WERE BEING CALLED BY KNOXVILLE APCH TO ASK ABOUT OUR ALT. I WAS ABLE TO RETURN TO 10000 FT WITHIN 1 - 1 1/2 MINS. THE RATE OF CLB IN EXCESS OF 1000 FPM I BELIEVE WAS EXCESSIVE FOR ALT CAPTURE, AND THE GPS DISTR TOOK MY FOCUS AWAY FROM FLYING THE ACFT.
