Narrative:

On a training flight, a student and I were practicing takeoffs and lndgs. We were on the left downwind to runway 10 when the tower advised us that we were #2, following a cherokee on the opposite downwind. We had the traffic in sight and advised the tower. We were then cleared for the option. Meanwhile, the C310 called inbound 4.9 mi northwest. The tower advised the pilot to report 2 mi northwest for left traffic runway 10. As the #1 cherokee traffic passed abeam us on final, we turned left base. Once established on base, my student and I both noticed the C310 on final and on a collision course with us. I took control of the aircraft and entered a rapid descent. We continued on a heading perpendicular to final as we descended. The C310 passed about 100 ft above us and about 300 ft behind.
