Narrative:

Taxiing in to gate xx, wing walkers were in place and signaling clear. As gate xx is at the terminal end of an alley and close to the terminal, the significant amount of ground equipment in the immediate area, and my unfamiliarity with this gate, I busied myself with monitoring clearance. With the aircraft taxiing very slowly the captain and I perceived the aircraft coming closer to the terminal than 'normal.' I observed the red stop light on as did the captain, and he immediately stopped the aircraft. Later examination revealed the upper surface of the #1 engine cowling had come in contact with the jetway bridge causing a dent.
