Narrative:
I departed hwo and clearance 270 degrees to 2000 ft. At about 1800 ft, ATC called out traffic at 12 O'clock position, 1 mi, wbound, 2100 ft. The sun was directly in my eyes. I informed ATC of this fact and he said something to the effect 'what? You can't see him? You followed him out of the airport.' I repeated that the sun was in my eyes. Meanwhile, I climbed through 2000 ft. At around 2200 ft, ATC cleared me to 5000 ft or 6000 ft. I was climbing through 2400 ft when I responded to ATC. He asked me what my clearance was. I then realized I had gone past 2000 ft. I was distraction by the sun/traffic and discussion with ATC.
