Narrative:

During the preflight, I noticed that the airworthiness certificate did not have a signature on it. I asked the mechanic if he knew whether the signature was required or not. He didn't know. I asked if he would call maintenance control and ask them about it. The mechanic told me that 'they are trying to determine if it is or not.' about 30 mins later, they told the mechanic that it was not required. We flew the aircraft to destination. I asked my chief pilot if it was/is required and he said 'yes, it is required.' I went back to the aircraft and wrote it up in the discrepancy log.
