Narrative:

Upon landing on runway 1R at iad, my sic and I exited the runway to the left at taxiway K5. Upon receiving taxi instructions to proceed via taxiway K, and consulting the commercial airport diagram and identing the taxiway K sign ahead and to the right, we made the right turn onto what we presumed was taxiway K. Before arriving at the next intersection, we noted that we were not paralleling runway 1R, but headed back towards it. I immediately notified ground control as we came to a stop that we had apparently made a wrong turn onto what the airport diagram indicated must be taxiway K4. We were given taxi instructions from that position and proceeded without further incident to the ramp.
