Narrative:

I was on an instructional flight flying from the right seat under the hood. It was the first time I'd flown in the right seat for many yrs. It was a practice tower en route flight to santa monica airport. I was told to proceed to the vny VOR and then outbound on the vny 095 degree radial for the smo VOR-a approach. Because I was not used to flying from the right seat, and under the hood at the time, I apparently deviated from my course to the vny VOR, according to ATC. They told us to turn left because there was traffic on our right side. The cfii on board had visual contact with the aircraft on our right and so advised ATC. The rest of the flight was uneventful.
