Narrative:

ZAU had me descend to 3000 ft and told to contact cid approach. Contacted cid approach and was told to expect vectors for the ILS runway 27 at cid. Was told to descend to 2000 ft. Started getting vectors for the approach. While on a 40 degree intercept, cid approach asked me to verify altitude. I replied 2000 ft to which cid approach informed me that I was supposed to be at 2700 ft. I then climbed back up to 2700 ft. What I should have done is to totally familiarize myself with all altitudes at the various position of the cid ILS runway 27. Had I done that, I would have been able to question the clearance to descend to 2000 ft. The government approach plate clearly states 2700 ft must be maintained until intercepting the GS. From this experience I have learned that I should not rely on the controllers but to verify clrncs with the approach charts. There are other critical altitudes other than decision ht.

Title: PLT OF A PIPER PA32 WAS CLRED TO A LOWER ALT THAN LEGALLY SPECIFIED FOR TRANSITION ALT FOR AN ILS APCH.

Narrative: ZAU HAD ME DSND TO 3000 FT AND TOLD TO CONTACT CID APCH. CONTACTED CID APCH AND WAS TOLD TO EXPECT VECTORS FOR THE ILS RWY 27 AT CID. WAS TOLD TO DSND TO 2000 FT. STARTED GETTING VECTORS FOR THE APCH. WHILE ON A 40 DEG INTERCEPT, CID APCH ASKED ME TO VERIFY ALT. I REPLIED 2000 FT TO WHICH CID APCH INFORMED ME THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AT 2700 FT. I THEN CLBED BACK UP TO 2700 FT. WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE IS TO TOTALLY FAMILIARIZE MYSELF WITH ALL ALTS AT THE VARIOUS POS OF THE CID ILS RWY 27. HAD I DONE THAT, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO QUESTION THE CLRNC TO DSND TO 2000 FT. THE GOV APCH PLATE CLRLY STATES 2700 FT MUST BE MAINTAINED UNTIL INTERCEPTING THE GS. FROM THIS EXPERIENCE I HAVE LEARNED THAT I SHOULD NOT RELY ON THE CTLRS BUT TO VERIFY CLRNCS WITH THE APCH CHARTS. THERE ARE OTHER CRITICAL ALTS OTHER THAN DECISION HT.
