Narrative:

We were following another DC9 taxiing out to runway 25L in milwaukee. That aircraft was cleared on to the runway and we were cleared to hold in position runway 25L. We read back position and hold runway 25L without a tower response. As we were lining up on the runway, the tower told us to hold short. We were in good position to clear the runway either left or right but the tower did not ask us to do anything, and canceled the landing clearance of an aircraft on final. Tower then cleared us for takeoff with no further comment.
