Narrative:

On downwind for ILS runway 24R at lax, crew initially smelled fumes followed by a noise and electrical annunciator lights. Aircraft was descending on the approach vector with the throttles at idle. The #1 engine egt was increasing toward red-line. The decision was made to shut down the #1 engine. An emergency was declared and all appropriate checklists completed. We received priority approach clearance and had an uneventful landing. The time lapse for this whole event was approximately 5 mins from initial indication to touchdown.

Title: A B737-400 ENG SHUTDOWN AND EMER DECLARED.

Narrative: ON DOWNWIND FOR ILS RWY 24R AT LAX, CREW INITIALLY SMELLED FUMES FOLLOWED BY A NOISE AND ELECTRICAL ANNUNCIATOR LIGHTS. ACFT WAS DSNDING ON THE APCH VECTOR WITH THE THROTTLES AT IDLE. WE RECEIVED PRIORITY APCH CLRNC AND HAD AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. THE TIME LAPSE FOR THIS WHOLE EVENT WAS APPROX 5 MINS FROM INITIAL INDICATION TO TOUCHDOWN.
