Narrative:

During climb out with a clearance to 5000 ft, the FMS indicated a dead reckoning mode indicating a loss of position information. As PF, I should have engaged the autoplt, however, both the first officer and I directed our attention to the FMS for problem resolution. Departed assigned altitude by 500-600 ft and was recapturing when queried by departure control. Supplemental information from acn 488557: climbing out of mco at approximately 2000 ft, we received a 'check position indication' from our FMS. The captain was hand flying and we both were paging through the FMS to reinitialize our position.
