Narrative:

After holding for gate at lga we were cleared to gate by ground control. After turning into ramp we noticed other aircraft were pushing off their gate. We stopped and contacted gate control and were told we should have contacted them first. I feel ground should tell you to contact gate control prior to clearing you to a gate and the gate control frequency should be published on the airport chart.
