Narrative:

I was working the radar associate position for 2 mins when the radar position began a briefing to be relieved for a break. During the briefing air carrier X was issued a clearance to deviate at his discretion. The new radar controller accepted the position. During the briefing some information was given erroneously and also left out. This caused the sector team to become distracted with duties it should not have been left to do. Aircraft X then deviated into the flight path of aircraft Y. Aircraft Y was level at FL250 waiting for higher. If we had not been bogged down with the extra duties from the poor briefing, we could have climbed aircraft Y to his requested altitude and possibly not have become involved in the error.
