Narrative:

My aircraft air carrier X was cleared into position and hold on runway 13L at dsm. After reaching position the tower issued a takeoff clearance to air carrier Y on a crossing runway. Both myself and my first officer understood the clearance to be for our aircraft. The first officer read back the clearance, we completed the takeoff checklist and initiated takeoff roll. The tower caught our mistake as we reached 60 KTS and I aborted the takeoff several thousand ft short of the crossing runway and the departing traffic. This problem resulted from very similar call signs. We, air carrier Y and air carrier X, do not sound the same and we are not sure exactly what the tower said but there was certainly no emphasis placed on the clearance nor on the runway it was being issued to. Both the first officer and myself were sure the clearance was for us, nor were we aware of conflicting traffic. Fortunately once the tower noticed both aircraft rolling he canceled our clearance and we were easily able to abort.

Title: FLC OF A CANADAIR REGIONAL CL65 RESPONDED TO BEECH 1900 TKOF CLRNC, ON A CROSS RWY, RESULTING IN TWR CTLR ABORTING THEIR TKOF.

Narrative: MY ACFT ACR X WAS CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 13L AT DSM. AFTER REACHING POS THE TWR ISSUED A TKOF CLRNC TO ACR Y ON A XING RWY. BOTH MYSELF AND MY FO UNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC TO BE FOR OUR ACFT. THE FO READ BACK THE CLRNC, WE COMPLETED THE TKOF CHKLIST AND INITIATED TKOF ROLL. THE TWR CAUGHT OUR MISTAKE AS WE REACHED 60 KTS AND I ABORTED THE TKOF SEVERAL THOUSAND FT SHORT OF THE XING RWY AND THE DEPARTING TFC. THIS PROB RESULTED FROM VERY SIMILAR CALL SIGNS. WE, ACR Y AND ACR X, DO NOT SOUND THE SAME AND WE ARE NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT THE TWR SAID BUT THERE WAS CERTAINLY NO EMPHASIS PLACED ON THE CLRNC NOR ON THE RWY IT WAS BEING ISSUED TO. BOTH THE FO AND MYSELF WERE SURE THE CLRNC WAS FOR US, NOR WERE WE AWARE OF CONFLICTING TFC. FORTUNATELY ONCE THE TWR NOTICED BOTH ACFT ROLLING HE CANCELED OUR CLRNC AND WE WERE EASILY ABLE TO ABORT.
