Narrative:
We were descending into sjc on the el nido 4 arrival and were told to maintain our altitude and that there was an opposite direction baron 1000 ft below us. I asked the controller if the baron had mode C. He said that yes he had a mode C readout on the baron. Our TCASII never picked up the baron at any setting at any range. I don't know how close we got to him because I never got a visual on him. Behind us on the el nido 4 arrival was air carrier Z. He said that he picked up the baron at 4 mi on his TCASII. The TCASII had pointed out all other traffic that day.
