Narrative:
Location: northeast of ord. On departure climb from ord below 10000 ft, we deviated left 20 degrees (020 degrees to 360 degrees) to avoid cloud build-ups. Radio traffic was heavy and due to proximity of the build-ups, I started the turn as captain advised ATC. The controller made a statement that, when in the tower area, we are on our own when we do that. After 5 or 6 seconds, we corrected back and were given heading 020 degrees.
