Narrative:

We the crew heard ATC clear us to FL220, with some confusion in the readback. FL220 was reconfirmed, and we continued. As we were out of 21700 ft MSL ATC asked our altitude and we replied 21700 ft MSL. ATC said 'I thought we discussed FL200.' we said we understood FL220. ATC came back and said 'that's ok, FL220 will be fine.' nothing else was said. Supplemental information from acn 481230: we were climbing out of the mid-teens and center told us to climb FL220. I repeated FL220. While we were out of FL213, he asked what altitude we were at. We told him FL213 and climbing. He then replied, 'I told you FL200 but don't worry about it, it is not a problem, climb and maintain FL220.'
