Narrative:

On jun/xa/00 while flying VFR with smog (fog and smoke) on radar vectors from concord regional (jqf) go hickory regional (hky), flew without clearance into hky class D airspace. In cruise on radar vectors by ZTL, advised that hky was about 12 O'clock when actually was about 2 O'clock +/-5 NM. Asked ZTL if the airport was the one at 2 O'clock position. ZTL acknowledged, terminated the radar service, asked for frequency change to hky tower. The airplane was already well inside hky class D airspace. Proceeded to circle and flew overhead the airport while contacting the hky tower. After traffic separation advisories, a clearance to land was received with incidents. Upon landing, voluntarily contacted the hky tower via telephone to apologize and explained what happened. Hky tower controller acknowledged it happened before.
