Narrative:

While waiting to cross runway 18L at dfw we were given instructions to cross. We looked down to our left and saw an aircraft approximately halfway down the runway in its takeoff roll. We then asked tower if that was what he meant since there was an aircraft on takeoff roll. He then corrected himself and said hold short. Crossed about a min later with no incident.
