Narrative:

As PNF I entered the robert FMS transition into iad airport. I checked the flight plan page to verify no 'fences' were built into the route. A fence will cause the end of the active flight plan at that particular waypoint. The airplane missed robert intersection because a fence was in the system. The 'direct' page must be checked for the fence -- something I did not know. The captain noticed the missed waypoint and corrected the FMS. We were also in a descent at the time to cross robert at 8000 ft MSL. ATC queried our heading and missing robert intersection and gave us a heading to intercept the FMS transition at sigbe intersection. The confusion over the 'fence' in the FMS was the causing factor. I did not know the proper place to check -- I only checked the flight plan page. Now I know which page to check. The question is -- will the next new first officer?

Title: A JETSTREAM 4100 FLC MISSES ROBERT INTXN WHEN THE FO FAILS TO QUERY THE DIRECT PAGE INSTEAD OF THE FLT PLAN PAGE FOR CONFIRMATION OF RTE CONTINUITY IN THEIR FMS, 25 MI FROM AML, VA.

Narrative: AS PNF I ENTERED THE ROBERT FMS TRANSITION INTO IAD ARPT. I CHKED THE FLT PLAN PAGE TO VERIFY NO 'FENCES' WERE BUILT INTO THE RTE. A FENCE WILL CAUSE THE END OF THE ACTIVE FLT PLAN AT THAT PARTICULAR WAYPOINT. THE AIRPLANE MISSED ROBERT INTXN BECAUSE A FENCE WAS IN THE SYS. THE 'DIRECT' PAGE MUST BE CHKED FOR THE FENCE -- SOMETHING I DID NOT KNOW. THE CAPT NOTICED THE MISSED WAYPOINT AND CORRECTED THE FMS. WE WERE ALSO IN A DSCNT AT THE TIME TO CROSS ROBERT AT 8000 FT MSL. ATC QUERIED OUR HEADING AND MISSING ROBERT INTXN AND GAVE US A HEADING TO INTERCEPT THE FMS TRANSITION AT SIGBE INTXN. THE CONFUSION OVER THE 'FENCE' IN THE FMS WAS THE CAUSING FACTOR. I DID NOT KNOW THE PROPER PLACE TO CHK -- I ONLY CHKED THE FLT PLAN PAGE. NOW I KNOW WHICH PAGE TO CHK. THE QUESTION IS -- WILL THE NEXT NEW FO?
