Narrative:

We were told to intercept J132 on a 360 degree heading (a 60 degree intercept). I set up the course, engaged the autoplt for capture. Because of the speed of the aircraft and the intercept angle, the aircraft overshot by about 1-1 1/2 dots on the course indicator and turned to reintercept. This is a perfectly normal intercept and something I think is no big deal, however, the center controller told us, we overshot the airway. At this time we were probably 2-3 mi off the centerline of the airway. Are we not allowed 4 mi? I understand the congestion and tight airspace constraints in the ZNY's airspace, however this is 1950's technology we are using in this aircraft, and maybe the FAA should consider FMC's in all aircraft if this is a problem.

Title: A DC9 IN CRUISE FLT OVERSHOOTS THEIR ASSIGNED OUTBOUND RADIAL WHEN THE ACFT'S AUTOPLT RESPONDS IN A SLOWER FASHION THAN EVERYONE EXPECTED 27 MI NW OF HUO, NY.

Narrative: WE WERE TOLD TO INTERCEPT J132 ON A 360 DEG HDG (A 60 DEG INTERCEPT). I SET UP THE COURSE, ENGAGED THE AUTOPLT FOR CAPTURE. BECAUSE OF THE SPD OF THE ACFT AND THE INTERCEPT ANGLE, THE ACFT OVERSHOT BY ABOUT 1-1 1/2 DOTS ON THE COURSE INDICATOR AND TURNED TO REINTERCEPT. THIS IS A PERFECTLY NORMAL INTERCEPT AND SOMETHING I THINK IS NO BIG DEAL, HOWEVER, THE CTR CTLR TOLD US, WE OVERSHOT THE AIRWAY. AT THIS TIME WE WERE PROBABLY 2-3 MI OFF THE CTRLINE OF THE AIRWAY. ARE WE NOT ALLOWED 4 MI? I UNDERSTAND THE CONGESTION AND TIGHT AIRSPACE CONSTRAINTS IN THE ZNY'S AIRSPACE, HOWEVER THIS IS 1950'S TECHNOLOGY WE ARE USING IN THIS ACFT, AND MAYBE THE FAA SHOULD CONSIDER FMC'S IN ALL ACFT IF THIS IS A PROB.
