Narrative:

Air carrier X, an MD80 was given a takeoff clearance to depart runway 36R. Air carrier Y, a DC9 landed on runway 36L and was instructed to hold short of runway 36R. The pilots acknowledged the instruction and continued past the hold short line. The local controller seeing this told air carrier Y to stop. Air carrier X climbed above the DC9. The DC9 never got on the runway but the nose was sitting west of the white line. When the pilot of the DC9 called the tower he said he was preoccupied on the flight deck and didn't realize where he was. He said the tower saved his life and the lives of others. The air carrier X pilot called and said just about the same thing. When the supervisor questioned the controller in charge about the incident, the controller in-charge said the DC9 never entered the runway. However, this is true but the DC9 was well beyond the hold short line. I believed everyone learned something. Thank god for scanning.
