Narrative:

Although it was VFR, I filed IFR flight plan from 09J to 73J to avoid having to dodge scattered clouds forecast at 3000 ft. Assigned en route altitude was 5000 ft. About 40 NM out of 73J, I was cleared to descend to 3000 ft. I was in VMC and continued my descent to 2500 ft. I remembered my altitude assignment when sav approach turned me over to beaufort approach. I canceled IFR. When VFR, I usually just request flight following. I simply forgot for a min that I was on an IFR flight plan.
