Narrative:

Upon departure from the gate at cleveland on jun/xa/00, cle-dtw we were given a taxi clearance to taxi to runway 5L and hold short of runway 5R. As we approached the intersection of txwys left and north, while completing our takeoff briefing, we were given what we thought was a clearance to cross runway 5R and hold short of runway 5L. As we began to cross runway 5R, ground control told us that they had wanted us hold short of runway 5R on taxiway left. They then cleared us to do a 180 degree turn on runway 5L and hold short of runway 5R. We were then given clearance to cross runway 5R and taxi back around to the approach end of runway 5R. The rest of the taxi and takeoff were uneventful. At the time we thought that we were given clearance to cross runway 5R (assuming a takeoff on runway 5L, which happened to be the original plan from the taxi clearance), there was an aircraft on a 4.5 mi final for runway 5R. There was no conflict. There was obviously some confusion about what runway cleveland wanted us to take off on. Although I believe the runway change was unclr. Supplemental information from acn 475005: as we approached the intersection of txwys left and north, while completing our takeoff briefing, we were given what we thought was a clearance to cross runway 5R and hold short of runway 5L.

Title: A DC9 FLC TAXIES ACROSS RWY 5R TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5L WHEN PREVIOUSLY TOLD TO HOLD SHORT RWY 5R AT CLE, OH.

Narrative: UPON DEP FROM THE GATE AT CLEVELAND ON JUN/XA/00, CLE-DTW WE WERE GIVEN A TAXI CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 5L AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5R. AS WE APCHED THE INTXN OF TXWYS L AND N, WHILE COMPLETING OUR TKOF BRIEFING, WE WERE GIVEN WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 5R AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5L. AS WE BEGAN TO CROSS RWY 5R, GND CTL TOLD US THAT THEY HAD WANTED US HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5R ON TXWY L. THEY THEN CLRED US TO DO A 180 DEG TURN ON RWY 5L AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5R. WE WERE THEN GIVEN CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 5R AND TAXI BACK AROUND TO THE APCH END OF RWY 5R. THE REST OF THE TAXI AND TKOF WERE UNEVENTFUL. AT THE TIME WE THOUGHT THAT WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 5R (ASSUMING A TKOF ON RWY 5L, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE THE ORIGINAL PLAN FROM THE TAXI CLRNC), THERE WAS AN ACFT ON A 4.5 MI FINAL FOR RWY 5R. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT. THERE WAS OBVIOUSLY SOME CONFUSION ABOUT WHAT RWY CLEVELAND WANTED US TO TAKE OFF ON. ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE THE RWY CHANGE WAS UNCLR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 475005: AS WE APCHED THE INTXN OF TXWYS L AND N, WHILE COMPLETING OUR TKOF BRIEFING, WE WERE GIVEN WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 5R AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5L.
